I get the impression that some people think that if they have a sat nav, they don’t need anything else. Well, sat navs are very useful, but they don’t replace commonsense and a good map.
I was driving from south of Tunbridge Wells to Finsbury Park in north London the other day, and, of course, I ran into all kinds of problems. First of all, there was an accident that closed the A21, so a detour was in order. But because the accident had obviously just happened, it hadn’t been reported, so the sat nav kept wanting to put me back on the A21, rather than divert. Luckily, I had both map and navigator in the car, so we just ignored the Sat Navs requests to make U Turns and got on with our diversion. In the end, it gave in and plotted another route, but if we had followed its demands for the first 10 minutes, we would have had the pleasure of sitting in a queue for a few hours.
Having said that, real time TMC reports available on the Tom Tom Traffic & GO LIVE, Becker TMC units, and Navman S90 are extremely useful once the incident is reported as you get the chance to avoid getting hung up in the bottlenecks.
