Technology is great, so long as it works; but the moment it gives up (for what ever reason) we can have a problem, especially if we have become reliant upon it.

What do Vienna, Berlin, Canberra, Birmingham and Paris have in common? They have all been mapped entirely by volunteers collecting GPS data.
Openstreetmap Foundation have 85, 000 volunteers worldwide, but it took 100 in Birmingham 4 years to pinpoint the data with hand held GPS which included over 700 bus stops, 300 post boxes and 300 [...]
